*Eskenderani, or Milaya Lef:* a dance form that was invented by Mahmoud REda to showcase the Alexandrian culture. Eskanderanie literally means man from Alexandria

In brief, it features the milaya, the "modesty veil" worn by women in that region. Since Alexandria is a port, there are many sailors who visit it, and the dance as conceived and staged by Reda was one by where the flipping and flapping of the veil is a flirtatious thing, suggesting a rather street wise girl on the docks of Alex. So it's a flirtation, a reveal and conceal type of attitude, playful, slightly naughty...

You can dress up for this one, and remember your big shawl to use as a Meleya

SUPPORTING ORIENTAL DANCE

Across the world, bellydancing is called different names. We call it Oriental Dance, which is a rough translation from the Arabic Raqs Sharqi, or "Dance of the East".

If anybody wishes to share articles or information about their specialised styles, we would love to feature you.

We can set up special pages on this site to host information about your initiatives, community projects, specialised wardrobe... your inspirations, research modules or links to your blogs.

Our beautiful bellydance is an unwritten tradition, so sometimes words do not suffice... As such, we would love you to send us your pictures.

Let us know what you think of our antique pin-up Fluesha on the top left corner. Winning picture entries for Fluesha's replacement are welcome!
